The History of JOPR

The Journal of Oil Palm Research made its debut as ELAEIS in June 1989. It is an international refereed journal, which carries full-length original research papers and scientific review papers on various aspects of oil palm and palm oil and other palms. The journal is circulated extensively within Malaysia as well as other countries to individuals, commercial organizations, agencies related with oil palm and palm oil, abstracting companies and academic institutions. With a humble beginning it started with a frequency of two times a year. ELAEIS was then published every June and December. The first few issues carried an average of seven articles per issue.

The journal then changed its name to Journal of Oil Palm Research in 1996, but it still maintained the frequency of two times a year.

Due to the increasing number of manuscripts the journal received, the frequency of publication was increased to three times a year beginning 2010. The new dates of publication was changed to April, August and December.

Journal of Oil Palm Research was first awarded the impact factor by the Journal Citation Report© Science Edition – a Thomson Reuters product in 2009. The first impact factor was 0.113, and kept on improving from time to time.

The journal is governed by an Editorial Board comprising of scientists who are experts in their various fields of specialisations. The Editorial Board which meets regularly is made up of Malaysian and foreign experts.

With further increase in the number of manuscripts it received, and the need to publish the research findings as soon as possible, the journal increased its publication frequency further to four times a year beginning 2014. The number of articles per issue had also increased considerably to an average of 13 articles per issue.

Keeping abreast with the advancement in technology, the Journal of Oil Palm Research is now available online and open access, besides the print edition.
