The History of JOPR

The Jour­nal of Oil Palm Research made its debut as ELAEIS in June 1989. It is an inter­na­tional ref­er­eed jour­nal, which car­ries full-length orig­i­nal research papers and sci­en­tific review papers on var­i­ous aspects of oil palm and palm oil and other palms. The jour­nal is cir­cu­lated exten­sively within Malaysia as well as other coun­tries to indi­vid­u­als, com­mer­cial orga­ni­za­tions, agen­cies related with oil palm and palm oil, abstract­ing com­pa­nies and aca­d­e­mic insti­tu­tions. With a hum­ble begin­ning it started with a fre­quency of two times a year. ELAEIS was then pub­lished every June and Decem­ber. The first few issues car­ried an aver­age of seven arti­cles per issue.

The jour­nal then changed its name to Jour­nal of Oil Palm Research in 1996, but it still main­tained the fre­quency of two times a year.

Due to the increas­ing num­ber of man­u­scripts the jour­nal received, the fre­quency of pub­li­ca­tion was increased to three times a year begin­ning 2010. The new dates of pub­li­ca­tion was changed to April, August and December.

Jour­nal of Oil Palm Research was first awarded the impact fac­tor by the Jour­nal Cita­tion Report© Sci­ence Edi­tion – a Thom­son Reuters prod­uct in 2009. The first impact fac­tor was 0.113, and kept on improv­ing from time to time.

The jour­nal is gov­erned by an Edi­to­r­ial Board com­pris­ing of sci­en­tists who are experts in their var­i­ous fields of spe­cial­i­sa­tions. The Edi­to­r­ial Board which meets reg­u­larly is made up of Malaysian and for­eign experts.

With fur­ther increase in the num­ber of man­u­scripts it received, and the need to pub­lish the research find­ings as soon as pos­si­ble, the jour­nal increased its pub­li­ca­tion fre­quency fur­ther to four times a year begin­ning 2014. The num­ber of arti­cles per issue had also increased con­sid­er­ably to an aver­age of 13 arti­cles per issue.

Keep­ing abreast with the advance­ment in tech­nol­ogy, the Jour­nal of Oil Palm Research is now avail­able online and open access, besides the print edition.
