GLOBAL RESEARCH TRENDS ON PALM OIL FUEL ASH (POFA) FROM 1995 TO 2025: A BIBLIOMETRIC ANALYSIS

Palm oil fuel ash (POFA) is a palm oil industry waste product, estimated to be generated at approximately 0.006 tonnes for every tonne of fresh fruit bunches (FFB). The continually increasing quantity of POFA is not matched by appropriate waste management or utilisation. Although many previous studies have utilised POFA, further research development is difficult because there is no comprehensive summary, review, or identification of previous research to determine research gaps and future opportunities. Therefore, this study conducts a bibliometric analysis of POFA using VOSviewer to identify current conditions and research gaps. The bibliometric analysis was sourced from the Scopus database with the keyword “Palm Oil Fuel Ash (POFA)” from 1995 to 2025. The results of the analysis show an increasing trend in POFA research over the past 10 years. These studies are dominated by Malaysian researchers, with the majority of POFA utilisation being as a mixture in concrete, cement and mortar. There are research opportunities for several of the largest palm oil producing countries such as Indonesia, Thailand, and Colombia, which have seen little research conducted. Research opportunities regarding POFA may include review articles, life cycle assessment (LCA), optimisation, economic analysis and commercialisation, particularly in cement, concrete, mortar, soil stabilisation, adsorbents and asphalt.
